ST. JAMES FOOD BANK
MISSION STATEMENT
To respond to human needs through loving service to those we serve by providing nutritious food; supporting health and well-being; and showing God’s love through our hospitality.
OVERVIEW
The St. James Episcopal Cathedral Food Bank distributes approximately 180 boxes of food to families each week (approximately 540 individuals). Each box contains a healthy meal for a family of four, and at least one lunch or breakfast.
On the 3rd Wednesday of every month, St. James provides a Neighborhood Produce Market. Fresh produce for this market is gathered and donated by the Central California Food Bank and delivered to us at no cost. We typically feed over 230 families (@ 690 individuals) this week.

St. James Food Bank works with Central California Food Bank by purchasing food items at low to no cost, affording maximum use of our budget. We participate biannually in CCFB’s quality training seminars, informing healthy standards of practice for our community. As a newly formed and ‘quick to grow’ nonprofit, we could not offer these gifts to our community without the guidance and support we have received from the Central Community Food Bank.
THE COMMUNITY WE SERVE
The 93726 zip code of St. James Food Bank is home to some of the highest unemployment rates in California. The zip code’s population is approximately 40,000 people and the current unemployment status is 40%. Those working part-time is approximately 28%, and those in full-time employment 32%. The median household income is $32,796, this figure has remained stable for the past 12 years. Approximately 50% of our immediate community is Hispanic, 26% Caucasian, and 12% Asian.
VOLUNTEERS
St. James Food Bank involves our community members as weekly volunteers in our Food Distribution. We have approximately 75 volunteers monthly on a rotational basis. Our volunteers, assist in setup and sanitation procedures, stack products for the weekly distribution, assist in general food preparation, as well as ‘bag’ the fresh produce for our Neighborhood Market.
In 2018, we began serving healthy snacks/meals twice per month to encourage ‘small table’ discussions. These ‘round-the-table meals’ offer sustenance to those in need, as well as encourage discussion and leadership among our community members - yielding productive feedback within St James Food Bank.
